Task 3: Envelope, Please!

Task 4: Check-In Conversation

Check-in with your group about your understanding of the text. Use your annotations to: 
1. Clarify confusing parts
2. Paraphrase essential ideas
3. Evaluate/Comment on content

Each person in the group must make at least one comment or ask at least one question. This time should be used to discuss the reason for your claim statement as well as the textual evidence you will use to support your claim.  

Task 5: Write a Short Answer Response

Earlier, you were given a purpose for reading the selection.  Based on your annotations, check-in conversations, and personal connections, you should now be able to answer the question for each selection. 
Step One: Determine your audience and tone.
Step Two: Turn your prompt into your claim.
Step Three: Support your claim with evidence. 
Step Four: Provide reasoning to connect your evidence and claim. 
Step Five: Restate the claim. State its significance.
 *Your paragraph should be around 100 words and about 5 or more sentences long. 

Task 6: Share Your Writing

After you finish your piece of writing, read your paragraph aloud to your partner. Then, discuss why you chose your piece of evidence and how you believe your reasoning explains how your evidence supports your claim. If you and/or your partner feel any changes could be made, write them down in a different color writing utensil on the same page.

After reading, discussing, and writing about the various name selections, we have discovered the importance of names. Using any of the following texts as your model, rewrite a short story by changing the subject to your name. You will need to change the content of the story to fit your name and how you feel about it.

In your groups, read your new short stories aloud. After reading, discuss the following question: How does a name impact a story?
